Nicholas Brendon’s Final Diagnosis New details have emerged about the death of Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor Nicholas Brendon, who died aged 54. Brendon died on 20 March. At the time, his relatives said he “passed in his sleep of natural causes.” Medical records cited by Page Six identify cardiovascular disease as the primary cause. The condition was tied to arterial blockages and high blood pressure. The document also listed pneumonia, with a previous heart attack included among the factors that contributed to his death. Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner described several serious findings in the report, including an enlarged heart, major obstruction in the right coronary artery and moderate narrowing in two additional arteries. The examination also found acute pneumonia and inflammation in the small bowel. According to the coroner’s findings, the bowel issue was most likely the result of reduced blood flow connected to cardiogenic shock. Brendon had spoken publicly about health issues in recent years. In August 2022, a since-deleted Instagram post said he had been hospitalised with tachycardia, an abnormal heart rhythm. The post also referenced a similar incident after his second spinal surgery for cauda equina syndrome. His manager, Theresa Fortier, previously told the Los Angeles Times that Brendon needed emergency surgery after a spinal injury from a fall in February 2021. She also said complications from a second surgery in October 2021 caused tachycardia, and that Brendon was later diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. Brendon was best known as Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Emmy-winning supernatural drama created by Joss Whedon. The series ran for seven seasons and became a defining genre show, with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan and David Boreanaz among its central cast. Brendon’s twin brother, Kelly Donovan, also appeared alongside him in two episodes. Gellar led tributes after his death, writing: “[cite=3420]I saw you, Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.[/cite]” Brendon’s role as Xander remains his most recognisable screen legacy, keeping him closely tied to one of television’s most enduring cult franchises.
