Jennifer Marshall, who portrayed Susan Hargrove—the mother of Max Mayfield, played by Sadie Sink—appeared in seasons two and four of the Netflix hit but did not return for season five. Her character’s absence was particularly noticeable during the finale’s hospital storyline, in which Max’s boyfriend Lucas Sinclair, portrayed by Caleb McLaughlin, remains at Max’s side while she lies unconscious. Marshall initially acknowledged the omission with humor on social media, posting a tongue-in-cheek message questioning why Susan never appeared at her daughter’s bedside. The actress previously revealed that she was undergoing cancer treatment while filming season four.
