Clubbing Still Kay’s Way
Vernon Kay isn’t letting ageist remarks cramp his style. The BBC Radio 2 presenter, now 51, has spent more than twenty years behind the decks, and he’s still just as comfortable in the DJ booth as he was in his twenties. Despite whispers that he’s “too old” for late nights and strobe lights, Kay insists he’s not ready to turn down the music any time soon.
“I think when you're 50 you've really got to focus on the things that you enjoyed when you were younger,” he told The Sun’s TV magazine.
It’s a stance that reflects more than just a love for nightlife — it’s a philosophy about keeping hold of passions regardless of age. Kay argues that clubs aren’t just for young partygoers but for anyone who enjoys music and atmosphere. That refusal to box himself in has been a hallmark of his career, whether he’s fronting hit TV shows, anchoring radio, or making the headlines with his off-the-cuff banter.
Away from the stage, the former All Star Family Fortunes host is also a hands-on dad. Married to Strictly Come Dancing star Tess Daly, the pair are parents to Phoebe, now a university student, and teenager Amber. Far from giving them an easy ride, Kay has spoken about the importance of graft and independence for his daughters — a stance that puts him at odds with the growing “nepo baby” debate in showbiz.
That no-nonsense approach also spilled over into a playful on-air clash with fellow Radio 2 broadcaster Jeremy Vine, when the pair discussed whether modern kids should still be expected to muck in with chores. Kay’s fiery reaction quickly became a talking point, showing that his straight-talking style resonates with listeners.
And if that wasn’t enough to keep him in the spotlight, Kay turned heads at Radio 2 in the Park, where he co-hosted alongside Michelle Visage. A cheeky exchange about the warm weather — ending with Kay joking he might be “fired” for flirting — reminded fans that he’s never been afraid to mix humour with professionalism.
From dancefloors to family debates and festival stages, Vernon Kay continues to prove that passion, energy, and a touch of cheek don’t come with an expiry date. For him, age really is just a number —and the beat goes on.
