Jim Carrey Accepts Honorary César as Online Rumours Swirl
Jim Carrey returned to the global stage on 26 February 2026 for the 51st César Awards in Paris, where he was presented with an honorary César celebrating his decades-long contribution to cinema.
The 64-year-old star attended the ceremony at the Olympia Theatre with his partner, Min Ah, accompanied by his daughter and grandson. He was welcomed to the stage by director Michel Gondry, his collaborator on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Delivering his acceptance speech entirely in French, Carrey reflected on his evolution from stand-up performer to internationally recognised actor. He also spoke about his ancestral links to France, recalling that his forebear, Marc-François Carré, emigrated from Saint-Malo to Canada approximately three centuries ago a detail he described as meaningful given the setting.
He wrapped up his remarks with self-deprecating humour, asking: “So, how was my French? Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I did not speak French, but I am just learning it. My tongue is tired.” The audience rose in applause.
While the evening was intended as a tribute to his body of work, conversation online soon took a different direction. As clips circulated across X, TikTok and Instagram, viewers began scrutinising Carrey’s appearance. His longer hairstyle and smooth-shaven face prompted speculation, with some users suggesting he looked markedly different from earlier phases of his career.
Side-by-side images referencing his 1990s performances in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask were widely shared, fuelling claims about altered facial features and changed mannerisms. Another strand of commentary focused on which hand he used when signing autographs, presented by some as supposed evidence of inconsistency.
There is no verified information supporting assertions that the performer was replaced or impersonated. Carrey, who has spent recent years largely outside the Hollywood spotlight pursuing painting and other personal projects, has not publicly engaged with the online theories.
