Industry Mourns Catherine O’Hara
Newly released records confirm that actress Catherine O’Hara died from a pulmonary embolism, with cancer identified as the underlying cause. A Los Angeles County death certificate issued on Monday lists the embolism as the immediate cause of death at a Santa Monica hospital. O’Hara died on January 30 at the age of 71, with rectal cancer noted as a contributing condition for which she had been receiving treatment since March last year.
Over a career that stretched across several decades, the Canadian-American performer earned widespread admiration for her distinctive comedic voice and emotional depth. She rose to mainstream prominence portraying the strong-willed mother in Home Alone and its sequel, before reuniting with director Tim Burton for the cult-classic Beetlejuice films. Her later work introduced her to a new generation of viewers, most notably through Schitt’s Creek, a role that earned her both a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe. The acclaimed series, led creatively by Dan Levy alongside Eugene Levy, marked a celebrated resurgence in her career.
News of O’Hara’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment world. Meryl Streep, Macaulay Culkin, Michael Keaton, and Seth Rogen were among those who shared messages honoring her legacy and influence. Eugene Levy, her longtime collaborator and on-screen husband on Schitt’s Creek, reflected on their decades-long connection, saying, “Words seem inadequate to express the loss I feel today. I had the honour of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over 50 years.”
Colleagues tied to her film work also highlighted her lasting impact. Alec Baldwin, who appeared with O’Hara in Beetlejuice, praised her rare comedic brilliance, while Home Alone director Chris Columbus has previously credited her with bringing emotional authenticity and grounded humor to family cinema.
Even in recent years, O’Hara remained active in high-profile projects. She appeared in the second season of The Last of Us, sharing the screen with Pedro Pascal, who joined others in recognizing her creative presence and generosity as a performer.
Medical experts note that a pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot obstructs blood flow in the lungs and can become fatal if not treated swiftly, according to the National Health Service.
