Reiner Murders Reexamined
TMZ Investigates aired a new episode on Fox on Friday, January 9, examining unresolved questions surrounding the December 2025 killings of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The documentary, hosted by Harvey Levin, focused on the alleged role of their son, Nick Reiner, who has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Authorities allege Nick fatally stabbed his parents at their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025, just hours after the family attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party. Nick was arrested later that day near Exposition Park and remains in custody without bail.
The episode reported that the alleged murder weapon has not been recovered, a key evidentiary issue for prosecutors. TMZ sources also claimed Nick was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in 2020 and had a long history of substance abuse and repeated short-term rehab stays, which the program suggested failed to address his mental illness.
TMZ further alleged Nick’s psychiatric medication was changed roughly one month before the killings, reportedly due to weight gain, and that Rob and Michele Reiner were increasingly alarmed by his behavior in the weeks leading up to their deaths.
Rob Reiner’s friend Bill Maher appeared in the documentary, criticizing political reactions to the tragedy and reflecting on Reiner’s legacy as a director whose work spanned genres and generations, following in the creative footsteps of his father, Carl Reiner.
Nick has not yet entered a plea. After his attorney Alan Jackson resigned from the case on January 7, 2026, public defender Kimberly Greene took over his defense. Nick is expected to return to court on February 23, 2026.
Rob and Michele Reiner’s children, Romy and Jake Reiner, previously released a statement expressing profound grief and gratitude for public support as the legal process continues.
