Forgotten Stranger Things Mom

A former Stranger Things supporting cast member has addressed her absence from the show’s final chapter, prompting discussion among fans after the series concluded on New Year’s Day.

Jennifer Marshall, who portrayed Susan Hargrove—the mother of Max Mayfield, played by Sadie Sink—appeared in seasons two and four of the Netflix hit but did not return for season five. Her character’s absence was particularly noticeable during the finale’s hospital storyline, in which Max’s boyfriend Lucas Sinclair, portrayed by Caleb McLaughlin, remains at Max’s side while she lies unconscious.

Marshall initially acknowledged the omission with humor on social media, posting a tongue-in-cheek message questioning why Susan never appeared at her daughter’s bedside. The post gained traction, leading to a follow-up in which the actress reflected more candidly on the situation and referenced her recent health challenges.

The actress previously revealed that she was undergoing cancer treatment while filming season four. Diagnosed with Stage 3 melanoma in 2022, Marshall shared that she was receiving treatment during production and experienced hair loss, requiring her to wear a wig on set. She has since confirmed she was in remission by the time season five went into production and noted that returning to work would have supported her union health coverage. Despite that, she was not asked back for the final season.

Marshall later clarified that her social-media remarks were not intended as criticism of the show or its creators. Speaking to Variety, she said: “I was surprised to not be called back but cannot confirm why that decision was made.”

She emphasized her gratitude for having been part of the series and expressed appreciation for the support she received while filming earlier seasons, including the kindness shown by Sink during a difficult period behind the scenes.
