Onscreen Chemistry, Offscreen Questions
BBC executives are reportedly keen for Morning Live presenters Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones to set the record straight about their relationship and end the ongoing guessing game among viewers.
More than 1.5 million people tune in to the weekday show on BBC One, where the popular duo discuss everything from health to human interest stories. But off-screen, the nature of their bond has become a hot topic.
Rumours of romance began soon after they started working together, only to be followed by whispers of a split earlier this year. Yet on Monday night, the pair reignited speculation after appearing side by side on the red carpet at the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards in London, with Gethin, 47, wrapping an arm around 42-year-old Helen.
According to insiders, that cosy appearance — and the “will-they-won’t-they” narrative surrounding them — has frustrated some senior figures at the BBC. One source told the Daily Mail:
“There’s a common feeling among them that it’s time for Helen and Gethin to confirm where they stand and stop playing around with the viewers. It’s time for clarity.”
The chemistry between the two has long been central to the show’s appeal. Gethin has fronted Morning Live since its launch five years ago, while Helen joined the line-up in 2023 — shortly after her split from ex-husband and former rugby league player Richie Myler, with whom she shares three children.
Their easy rapport has drawn comparisons to iconic presenting pairs like Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, whose natural connection helped This Morning become a daytime staple. It’s believed BBC bosses hoped Helen and Gethin’s on-screen charm would similarly bolster Morning Live’s success — though perhaps not blur the line between professional and personal quite so much.
Neither presenter has confirmed nor denied the rumours, but their appearances together — from the BAFTAs in May to this week’s awards show — continue to keep fans, and the BBC, talking.
