British High Commissioner Leigh Stubblefield, on Monday 12 January 2026, presented her Letters of Credence to His Excellency President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, marking the formal start of her role as the UK’s representative in Malawi.

The ceremony at State House in Lilongwe follows tradition observed when a new ambassador or high commissioner takes up their post.

A new chapter in UK-Malawi relations

Speaking after the ceremony, High Commissioner Stubblefield said:

"It is a privilege to take up this role and to present my credentials to President Mutharika. The friendship between the UK and Malawi is long-standing and deeply valued.

I am committed to strengthening our partnership — working together on economic growth, trade and investment, and the issues that matter most to people in both our countries.

Malawi is a nation of tremendous potential, and I look forward to working alongside the government and people of Malawi as we build an even stronger relationship."
